以前アメリカ人の友人とけんかをしてしまい、
「あなたは困ったときに頼りにならない友人ね」
といわれてしまいました。
そんなプライベートな話はどうでもいい、
とお思いでしょうが、
このときに面白い英語表現を彼女が使ったので
それを今回はご紹介したいと思います。
けんかして批判をされている最中でも、
「これはブログ記事ネタになるぞ」
と思ってしまうあたり、私はやっぱり友達失格なのかも、、、
ケンカの最中、その女友達は僕のことをこう呼んだのです。

この聞きなれない
fair weather friend
こそが、「困ったときに頼りにならない友人」
という意味になるのです。
物事が順調だったり、
自分に利益があるときは、友達面をして、
楽しく一緒に過ごしているけど、
いったん友達が困ったときや、助けが必要なときは
なんだかんだ都合が悪いといって
友達を助けようとしない人のことです。
と、言葉で書くと
とても悪い人ですね。
夜中にその友達が困っていたとき、
僕にメールをしてきたのですが、
勝手に「たいしたことないだろう」
とおもったのと、
仕事が忙しくて疲れていたので
「今日は遅いから明日話を聞くよ」
とメールして、寝てしまったのです。
次の日、朝メールをしたのですが、
その子は怒っていました。
前の日の夜に話をしたかったからです。
前の日の夜に必要とされていたのに、
「疲れているから」と返信して寝てしまったからです。
その日は一日中ケンカしていましたが
平謝りで
何とか仲直りはできました。
友達は大切にしましょう。
くれぐれも僕みたいに
fair weather friend
と言われないように。
